Art, Property of Politics III: Closed Architecture
Jonas Staal
Named after the 2004 graduation project of Partij voor de Vrijheid MP Fleur Agema, Closed Architecture comprises a sketch for a new prison model, which Agema has developed during her Master’s degree in Interior Design at the Utrecht School of the Arts. Jonas Staal expanded Agema’s texts and sketches into a fully developed models, visualizing her thoughts in detail, and thereby offering new insight into her ideas and concepts. Several architects and designers have assisted Staal during his research, which has resulted in a number of digital renderings, of which a video is on view in 1:1 at Extra City, and a scale model, also on view.

An Exhibition - Another Exhibition
Valérie Mannaerts
An exhibition - Another exhibition is the first monograph about the work of Belgian artist Valérie Mannaerts. The book catalogues two solo exhibitions that took place in 2010, Blood Flow at Extra City Kunsthal Antwerpen, and Diamond Dancer at de Appel arts centre. In her work, Mannaerts extends the work of collage to spatial objects. She explores the physiognomic qualities of things, questioning the relation between organic and inorganic forms, the presence and autonomy of objects as well as the histories sedimented within them.
With an essay by Anselm Franke, a conversation between the artist and Ann Demeester, and photography by Kristien Daem.
A co-production of Sternberg Press with de Appel arts centre and Extra City Kunsthal Antwerpen.

Working at Copan
Peter Friedl
Working at Copan collects interviews with workers and employees at Edifício Copan, a landmark modernist architecture in the center of São Paulo. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1966, it became the largest residential building in Latin America. As a historical building it embodies an era of radical political and economic changes within Brazilian society. In this book project, artist Peter Friedl deals with the work left over from the modern era.
